We just had our final field trip to
Spoleto, Perugia, and Assisi. Even though Umbria was not located on the Amalfi coast
visiting the beautiful quiet countryside was fantastic. We spent the first afternoon of our
trip in Spoleto where we took time to sketch and explore the town. The sketch below was drawn looking into Piazza Del Duomo from the colonnade of the Duomo. A highlight of the day was visiting the Ponte
delle Torri which is a large bridge that spanned 862 feet and was 270 feet
tall.
Later that day we traveled
to Perugia where I had my first Kebab ever in Italy and it was fantastic. After a brief 24 hour stay in Perugia we approached
our final destination which was Assisi. Historically Assisi was the town where Saint Francis, the patron saint of Italy lived and died. The tomb of Saint
Francis was located in the main basilica dedicated to him (Basilica
of St. Francis in Assisi). His tomb has been known as a destination for thousand
of devotees that come to pay homage every year. Unfortunately we were unable to
take photos of the tomb.
We also spent quite a bit of time watching
sunsets from Rocca Maggiore, which is a castle located on the top of one of the
highest points in Assisi. The views from the Rocca Maggiore were incredible in
the early evening. In addition to just
viewing the exterior of the castle we were able to actually tour the inside. I
was excited to go on the tour especially because I had never been in a castle
before. One of my favorite features of the Rocca Maggiore was walking along
the long and narrow hallway that was once used by archers during battles. The
following images below show views from, as well as inside Rocca Maggiore. Our
last field trip was amazing and just when I thought Italy couldn’t get any more
beautiful this trip once again proved me wrong.
