Spoleto, Perugia, & Assisi

Walking ontop of an aquaduct to climb the tower in the background

This last weekend we took our second class field trip to visit the three hill towns of Umbria - Spoleto, Perugia, & Assisi. Our first leg of the trip was Spoleto where we were given a brief orientation tour before being set lose by Matt to explore on our own. Definately the highlight of this town was venturing out to the aquaduct and walking across it to the tower ruins on the other side. Climbing the ruins once across the aquaduct proved to be an adventure and a test of our climbing skills but it was worth it to get an unobstructed view out over the surrounding landscape and watching Kelton freak me out doing crazy yoga poses super close to the ledge.

Our second portion of the trip was a visit to Perugia where again a group of us decided to take a long hike out to visit the Church of St. Angelo (the Tempietto) which was a welcomed site for us to have a chance to lay in the shade on the grass and sketch for a while as a break from our wandering around the town earlier in the day.

Representing Idaho after our picnic in Assisi
Our trip then concluded with a visit to Assisi, which is my favorite town out of the three. The stone buildings, medieval metal work, the glass panels in shops to reveal layers underneath, and all the bright and blooming flowers everywhere made it a beautiful and scerene place to visit. It was a relaxing place to spend some time sketching and exploring throughout the town. It was also a highlight for me to be able to visit these important churches that my husband knows so much about from his theology education (in particular with Saint Francis and Saint Clair) and to then tell him all about what I saw and experienced there. As a group, we also spent every evening up the hill at the castel to watch the sunset over the town and surrounding country, and on our last night we spent some time trying to work together to spell out IDAHO in the shadows against the castel wall using our bodies. I think we were pretty successful representing Idaho in Umbria!
