Historic Surprises

How does one even begin to put into words the experience of a city like Rome? We have only been here five days and journeyed through decades of past history. It's hard to believe that we are only just beginning to scrape the surface. One of the most fascinating things I am becoming aware of is that the city is similar to an artist's masterpiece...not one spot is left untouched.
Walking along the roads that curve and intertwine and disappear within blocks sets the scene for surprise. This was first apparent when we walked around a corner only to be blocked by the Pantheon, quite an amazing experience. With the knowledge that Matt has about the city he is able to ensure these moments. At one point you will think you're just walking down some random street in order to get to a monument when you are actually standing in a piece of history.
A perfect example of this is the story behind Aldo Moro. We were on a walking tour with Matt when he stopped us outside the side of a building. He then began with the story of Aldo being kidnapped and the whole city being in lock down mode in order to locate him. The significance of the spot was that it was where he was found unfortunately in the trunk of a car. Anecdotes like these exist throughout the city and we are so fortunate to have access to them. I anticipate the numerous stories still to come!
(Just to clarify, this is an older blog I did but have just gained access to posting blogs so that explains the span of only five days in Rome.)
