Costa Amalfitana
We had our field trip to Atrani last weekend and it was quite the journey. It is funny to think that we are experiencing these places that people only dream of going or see in pictures. Pictures definitely don't do the Amalfi Coast justice. It baffles me that these cities were built so long ago with such precision and were able to sustain inhabitants up to the present day. Around every corner there is a new set of stairs to climb, literally a maze, even more complex than the streets of Rome. When we hiked up to Ravello the second day we were there, not only did I get the best work out of my life, but the views were incredible. Around 1,300 steps we climbed (yes, I counted) up to the top of Ravello just north of Atrani. We looked around at, what seemed like, the vast mountain we conquered, and saw the picturesque scenery surrounding us. Truly an experience worthwhile. The next day a few of us decided to head west along the coastline looking for Grotta Smeralda.... little did we know there was nothing to be found over there except an overpriced tour of a small stalactite cavity, which of course we paid for. Although, our final destination wasn't what we expected, the hike was too beautiful to complain.
The day after there was much to explore around Amalfi and Atrani so we stuck around and did some sketching. The locals were friendly, the food was immaculate, and the scenery was outstanding.
