Week two in Rome was full of walking tours and sketching, with a little nightlife thrown in. The walking tours were very informational and interesting, and were all three very different and historically inspiring. We also got to go to the Colosseum this week which is a stunning structure, especially considering its age. Another extremely intriguing stop was in the San Clemente church on our early Christian Church walking tour. We got to go underneath the existing structure to see the church which was built earlier and used before the top church which was an excellent example of the layers in which Rome was constructed. We then got to go underneath that structure, for a total of 35 feet under the main street level to see some even older Roman apartments/living quarters which were even more intriguing. Being a bit claustrophobic, I was a bit concerned about being 35 feet underground in small, tight spaces, but the opportunity was too exciting too miss, and it went pretty well. We also attended the festival of the republic, which was a large, military parade in downtown Rome which celebrates when the country voted for a Republican government back in 1946, which was a cool cultural experience. Overall this week was extremely educational and very productive.
