Caravaggio at Scuderie

Today I waited in line for four hours to see an exhibition of paintings by Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, the Lombard Master commonly known as Caravaggio. It was well worth the time and 10 euros spent.

The curators of the museum chose 24 paintings known to be exclusively by Caravaggio, rather than include some of the many paintings with ambiguous relationships to the master.
Words cannot describe the depth of emotion entrenched in these paintings, but a quote from a museum placard captures it better than I...

"...The reality of life is manifest for what it truly is. Splendid, precarious, fragile, full of beauty but threatened by decay... So fine that, precisely for this reason, it is rapidly beginning to undergo the normal process of decline..."
