This week was really amazing because the fresh thrills and excitement of being in Rome have sort of worn away and what is left if the realization of how layered and complex the city is. As a tourist you come to Rome and see some of the beautiful and mind-blowing monuments, but then you leave. Trevi, check, Colosseum, check, Vatican, check, Pantheon, check. However, being here as a student creates a whole different perspective.
This point is really driven home when we go on the walking tours. Yes we go to some areas that are popular tourist destinations such as the Forum. But what we get from being there is not just a picture awkwardly posing in front of the ruins of empires. We get to talk home a real knowledge of this place and a humble understanding that we will probably never being able to know enough no matter how much time we spend here.
Week one was impressive beyond measure but week two was astonishing and humbling. It's weird to think that I wont be here in three weeks to keep being amazed by this place.
