The first week in Rome has definitely been an exciting experience. I had some unfortunate luck (and some dumb mistakes) with some of my luggage and laptop but it all ended up miraculously working out in the end thanks to a couple generous helpers. Other than that, the tours and sights have been truly awe inspiring. It seems uncanny to be living among such important and magnificent artifacts. The culture is a lot different here than in the states, and although it can be a bit fatiguing to try and assimilate into, it can definitely be worthwhile and enjoyable. I think my favorite experiences so far have been Emilie's birthday night and just going off on your own to sketch. Emilie's birthday was spent at a nearby restaurant and bar, where the locals were especially festive, and seemed very welcoming to our birthday festivities, despite some cultural differences. A small table next to us even sang happy birthday to Emilie after we sang it in English, which was a surprisingly touching moment, and generous display of being welcomed to the city. We then headed off to Geniculum hill and hung out there for a while which was absolutely surreal. Overlooking the city at night, combined with the active nightlife here was incredible. I look forward to more opportunities to learn about and engage with the culture, as well as our design opportunities in this unique urban environment.
