I will return

As the program was coming to a close I've realized that I would never really want to live there for two reasons.

  1. Very little new things are designed and built from scratch.
  2. It is sensory overload.
As it would be interesting to learn the practice of restoring a building, I would also want to integrate new forms of ideas into what has already been done. Rome would seem to be the ideal place for this but it is also the most difficult as people don't want the city to develop. We see very few examples of this and I hope this one day changes for the better.

To add to this, the richness of history each structure has is overwhelming. Constantly being bombarded by immaculate facades and urban fabric that supports piazzas with priceless sculptures of old is difficult for me to make sense of it all. There is hardly time to breath and reflect on what you have seen unless you are enclosed for an extended period of time in a deprivation chamber with a pencil and paper. Visiting for an extended period and then leaving was the best way to learn to appreciate the city. It is a place that you must return multiple times in your life; each time hopefully peeling back another layer of the palimpsest.
